When I run the file with facemaker I get a set of characters with all the same face of bricks and when I move the grey background above the brick layer I get all the characters with a grey face.

Well, as you can see in my file, they skipped each letter. I recall using it the first time with random, and then when I toggled random off the next time, it seems like it still runs random.

This is what I was "expecting", but apparently cannot do using Face Maker.

Weird! I can't replicate that. When I toggle it produces random faces. When I toggle back it produces one type of face!

Try this version - it is actually an ammended version of what it says on the version number.

So, am I misunderstanding and only one effect can be done to all letters at the same time? Can you screenshot your settings?

Font To Layers works flawlessly, as well as Font Effects. Face Maker and Metal Effects aren't working correctly on my end. Did I need to add some textures or environment maps to a special folder?

Facemaker can produce either a random or non-random selection of faces from the available decorative layers and it can also use all of the decorative layers if that option is also used. If you set use all decorative layers to 'Yes' with two decorative layers it will produce the result you had.

The filter uses the topmost decorative layer:

Until Use all decorative layers (3 in total here) is set and then creates the layers in ordered sequence:

Unless you select randomise use of decorative layers to 'Yes':

2.10.20

So Face Maker is behaving properly. Metallics just leaves lines on my letters.

Yup Facemaker is behaving as expected (according to my own logic - weird as it may be).

There is a further facemaker option that takes named decorative layers and applies them to categories of characters :

I haven't tested any of the filters with Gimp 2.10.20 yet - waiting to see how the long-standing issue with gimp-fu dialogs panned out - so that may or may not be an issue with the Metallic filters. Basic Metallic works with plain letters but it should overlay the metallic effect onto existing patterned letters if that option is set to 'YES'. The dull effect produces the best results with existing textures. The only time the filter looks for a decorative layer is when it tries to use the verdigris texture option.
